Pandemic Influenza (H1N1) 2009 - Current situation in the WHO African region
As of November 09, 2009, 09H00 GMT, 29 countries have officially reported 14868 laboratory confirmed human cases of pandemic (H1N1) 2009 including 103 deaths.

First Annual Partners Meeting on Control of Neglected Diseases Opens in Entebbe

Entebbe, 5 November  2009 – The  first Annual Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) Control Partners’ Meeting organized in the WHO African Region is scheduled to take place from 5 to  6 November in Entebbe, Uganda.

The meeting brings together national NTDs programme managers, WHO programme staff, and major international partners involved in the efforts to control NTDs in the African Region. read more

Global Health Promotion Conference ends with a call for urgent action to save lives and avoidable illness

Nairobi, 30 October 2009 -- Delegates at the 7th Global Health Conference on Health Promotion which ended on Friday 30th October in Nairobi, Kenya have called on governments, civil society, development organizations and health services to join forces and reposition health promotion policies and programmes to curb the unacceptable global toll of preventable ill-health and death.

At the end of the historic 5-day conference which was opened by His Excellency President Mwai Kibaki of Kenya, the participants issued the “The Nairobi Call to Action for Closing the Implementation Gap in Health Promotion”, emphasizing that health promotion is the most cost-effective strategy to improve health and quality of life. The Call to Action identified the major actions required to reduce health inequities and boost progress towards the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). read more

The 7th Global Conference on Health Promotion: President Kibaki urges more resources for African health challenges

Nairobi, 26 October 2009 -- The 7th Global Conference on Health Promotion, opened on Monday 26 October 2009 at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre in Nairobi. His Excellency President Mwai Kibaki of Kenya called on African leaders to find innovative ways to mobilize resources to finance priority health programmes.

The conference, the first of its kind to be held on the continent of Africa and attended by over 500 delegates from around the world, has adopted the theme ‘Promoting Health and development, Closing the implementation gap'. Declaring the conference open, the Kenyan President said that holding the conference in Africa was a demonstration of the commitment to addressing the health challenges facing the continent. read more

The World Health Organization and the UNDP are inviting nominations of initiatives that have provided effective solutions to public health problems.
